Finch Information

It’s not surprising that these active, fun, beautiful little birds are such popular pets.  Finches are very easy to care for and make wonderful pets for anyone including those who live in apartments, have children and even those who have other pets.

Finches come in an incredible array of colors, patterns and personalities.  The most popular varieties of finches include the Zebra Finch, the Gouldian Finch and the Society Finch.  Most finch species are very social and can safely be housed in spacious cages with other finches and hard-bills.  But larger finch species can be very aggressive towards smaller species.  Since parakeets, lovebirds and other hook-bills are naturally very aggressive; it is not recommended that you house you finches with these types of birds.  Be sure not to overcrowd your finches because it can lead to feather picking.  Although finches are very friendly, mixed groups of birds should still be monitored for bullying and fighting.  The fact that finches are very social and prefer to play among themselves is a plus in regards to the fact that they will not pout like a parrot would if you weren’t able to play with them every day.  Since finches are more interested in other birds than they are in people, you may find it very hard to finger tame these beauties.  While most finches will not be able to be handled, there are a few finch species that can be finger tamed with time and patience.  If you do need to handle your finch for something like trimming its nails or placing it in another cage while the main cage is being cleaned, place your palm on its back and wrap your fingers around the bird with your thumb and forefinger on either side of the head. Be very gentle with your finch.  These are small, delicate birds.  Finches hardly ever bite, and if they should bite, they do not have a harmful or dangerous bite.

Finches are extremely easy to care for but they are active so they must have plenty of room to move around easily in their cages.  It is imperative that they be able to fly from perch to perch so be sure to keep their cage accessories to a minimum allowing them room to move about freely.  All they truly need is a single toy, mirror or branch that can be moved around within the cage periodically to provide variety for your birds.  Toys that are safe for parakeets are also safe for finches.  It is highly recommended that your treat your finches to bird baths within their cages a couple of times a week.  Wild finches love to roll in dew dampened grasses for a nice bath so you can provide your birds with a small amount of damp dandelion leaves or grasses in the bottom ot the cage for a few hours as well.

These lovely and hardy birds also tend to be more quiet then some other bird species.  Plus, they are also less costly to purchase than many parrots and soft-billed birds, adding to their appeal as pets.  Finches will provide endless entertainment with their cheerful little voices and their unique personalities.  People enjoy them for their beautiful colors, their endless energy, and their plumage and for their song.
